Paper Craft - Paper Beads

Updated: Apr 12, 2024

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make paper beads along with some helpful tips:

Materials Needed:

  • Colored paper or magazine pages

  • Scissors

  • Glue (craft glue or white glue works well)

  • Toothpick or bamboo skewer

  • Optional: Clear nail polish or Mod Podge for sealing the beads

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Paper: Start by cutting strips of paper from your chosen material. The width and length of the strips will determine the size and shape of your beads. Experiment with different sizes for varying results. A width of about 1 inch (2.5 cm) and a length of 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) works well for most beads.

  2. Create a Triangle Base: Take one strip of paper and fold it diagonally from one corner to the opposite edge, creating a triangle shape. Make sure the edges align neatly and press firmly to create a crease.

  3. Roll the Bead: Starting from the wide end of the triangle, tightly roll the paper strip around a toothpick or bamboo skewer. Roll slowly and evenly to ensure a smooth and uniform bead. Apply a thin line of glue along the edge of the paper as you roll to secure the bead in place.

  4. Finish Rolling: Continue rolling the paper strip until you reach the narrow end of the triangle. Apply a small amount of glue to the end of the paper and press it firmly against the bead to seal it shut. Hold it in place for a few seconds to allow the glue to set.

  5. Remove the Bead: Carefully slide the bead off the toothpick or skewer once the glue has dried completely. You should now have a basic paper bead shape.

  6. Make More Beads: Repeat the process with additional paper strips to create as many beads as desired. You can use the same color or mix and match different colors and patterns for a more dynamic look.

  7. Seal the Beads (Optional): To add durability and shine to your paper beads, you can apply a coat of clear nail polish or Mod Podge over each bead. This will help protect the paper from moisture and wear, as well as give the beads a glossy finish.

  8. String Your Beads: Once the beads are dry, you can string them onto a necklace, bracelet, or earrings using jewelry wire, string, or elastic cord. Mix and match bead sizes and colors to create unique jewelry designs.

  9. Experiment with Shapes: Don't be afraid to experiment with different shapes and sizes of paper strips to create beads with varying textures and dimensions. You can try cutting strips with tapered ends or using different folding techniques for more intricate designs.

  10. Have Fun and Get Creative: Making paper beads is a fun and versatile craft that allows for endless creativity. Don't be afraid to try new techniques and combinations to create unique and beautiful jewelry pieces.

Tips:

  • Use lightweight paper for easier rolling and shaping of the beads. Magazine pages, scrapbook paper, or origami paper work well.

  • Apply glue sparingly to avoid excess glue seeping out and creating bumps on the surface of the bead.

  • Experiment with different finishes for your beads, such as metallic or patterned papers, to create eye-catching jewelry designs.

  • Allow the beads to dry completely before stringing them to prevent them from sticking together or smudging the finish.

  • Store your paper beads in a dry, cool place to prevent them from warping or becoming damaged over time.

With these steps and tips, you can create your own stunning paper bead jewelry to wear or give as gifts. Enjoy crafting!
